The best way to sample Spanish wine is in a restaurant or bar in Spain.
Unfortunately, we’re not in Spain but we can help you in your quest to
taste some of the best Spanish wines available in the United
States. Wines from Spain are this year’s hot property. From dry, crisp Albariños,
Sherries from Jerez and sparkling wine known as Cava to bold, luscious
Tempranillos and everything in between, you will want
to be on hand as we taste from a selection of 30-50 Spanish wines. In addition
to tasting wine, we will have cheeses from Spain and an assortment of tapas
prepared by Hilton Executive Chef Larry Walker.
Today's Spain has more land planted with vineyards than any other country
in the wine world, making it, after Italy and France, the third-largest
producer of wine. The Spanish wine industry is one of the most modern in
the world in terms of technology and most of the revolution occurred over
the past 25 years.
Spain has an abundance of native grape varieties, with more than 600 varieties
planted throughout Spain though 80 percent of the country's wine production
is from only 20 grapes — including Tempranillo,
Albariño, Garnacha, Palomino, Airen, Macabeo, Parellada, Xarel·lo, Cariñena
and Monastrell. Major Spanish wine regions include the Rioja and Ribera del
Duero which is known for their Tempranillo production;
Jerez, the home of the fortified wine Sherry; Rías Baixas in the northwest
region of Galicia that is known for its white wines made from Albariño and
Catalonia which includes the Cava and still wine producing regions of the
Penedès as well the Priorat region.
